Penang Science Cluster

Origin:

Penang Science Cluster (PSC) (formerly known as Penang Science Council) is an industry-led initiative in collaboration with the State Government. It was initiated by YAB Chief Minister in 2009 and formally incorporated 2012.

Our first centre was in Krystal Point, with the first workshop starting on 14 December 2013, and was officially opened by Penang’s Chief Minister on 18 April 2014.

Now we have our 13 000 sq. ft. main centre, PSC@Heritage, at the Wisma Yeap Chor Ee building in Georgetown that was launched on 5 December 2015. The entire ground floor is provided rent-free to PSC by Penang Development Corporation.

Board of Directors:

Members of PSC’s Board of Directors come from multinationals and leading local companies.

Pillar Heads are B. Braun, Intel, Keysight Technologies and Motorola Solutions.

Co-leads are Agilent Technologies, HP Malaysia Manufacturing, DreamCatcher and NI.

Other directors come from Exabytes, Mini-Circuits, ViTrox and Jabil.

What Do We Do

PSC is a non-profit, tax-exempt organisation with a mission to build a healthy pipeline of talent in Penang and Malaysia by sparking interest in science and technology, creating a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship among our young in Penang and Malaysia.

PSC inspires students through hands-on, inquiry-based science and technology programs. PSC supports 200+ schools in our TechMentor Lego Robotics, Embedded Systems, Coding and Radio Astronomy programs with 150+ volunteer mentors from industry, coupled with a loan of hardware and software purchased through the generosity of sponsors. All the programs are free to schools.

PSC organises Penang International Science Fair (PISF), a premier science and technology exhibition held annually with the participation of industry to showcase technologies from industry, educate and inspire students. Around 60,000 attendees participated in our PISF each year.

PSC encourages and supports the establishment of science cafes in population centres and MakerLabs in schools in Penang to promote the learning of STEM subjects in a fun and hands-on approach and to support the growth of the maker movement in Penang.

Our generous sponsors enabled us to host 120 schools each year for full-day workshops at our science cafes. Sponsors donate RM1,500 per school to cover the transport, lunch and workshop expenses for 40 students accompanied by 4 teachers.

All donations are tax-exempted. As a non-profit organisation, we strive to keep our operational costs low. We welcome companies to help us by sponsoring their services to PSC and for volunteers to help us help our next generation.

We welcome collaboration with all parties as long as the primary beneficiaries are the young in Malaysia.
