The Economic Cooperation Organization Science Foundation (ECOSF) is an intergovernmental body and specialized agency of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO). It was established in Islamabad, Pakistan in 2011 with a mandate to promote scientific and technological research with the goal of raising the socio-economic standing of ten member states – Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. ECOSF serves as a platform for contribution towards the promotion of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education to strengthen the science base of future generations and the regional economy of ECO member states.

The ECOSF realizes that there is an interactive relationship between the improvement of science literacy and GDP growth along with science, technology, education and investment in science popularization. Thus ECOSF has undertaken several initiatives that supplement and complement its Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) programmes with the help of strategic partners to boost capacity building and contribute towards regional cooperation and economic and cultural integration through promotion of science education and literacy in the region. It strives to engage youth in all its activities and integrates a gender perspective into policies, plans and actions directed towards socio-economic development in line with UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the ECO Vision 2025.

The Foundation strives to promote science literacy and education through its different programmes amongst its 10 Member States. It is making efforts to boost science literacy through the exchange of scientists in and out of the ECO region and participation in various scientific and technological events such as conferences, workshops, seminars and forums as well as among the member states. the Foundation in collaboration with its partners has been organizing workshops, conferences, science cultural festivals and science summer camps to inculcate the urge among children, their parents and the public at large for learning science around us and in the universe; so as to promote Science Literacy and Culture in the region. 

ECOSF organizes and participates in the International Workshops, Conferences, Seminars to deliberate on a number of thematic areas of science education and literacty, implementation of effective science teaching and policy measures on science education around the globe. The Foundation regularly contributes to the discussion and interaction of the digital & development revolution, SDGs, non formal science education, science museums, women in science, role of media in promoting science education and linkages between science & sustainable development and the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education following Inquiry Based Science Education (IBSE) methods at various levels from preschool through primary, secondary and tertiary/higher education education to lifelong learning.

The ECOSF has developed strong working collaborations with international and regional organizations. The Foundation is proud to partner with many of most reputable organizations and development partners, such as the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), International Science, Technology and Innovation Centre for South-South Cooperation under the auspices of UNESCO (ISTIC), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; European Union; UNESCO, Korea Institute of Science & Technology Evaluation and Planning (KISTEP), International Science and Technology Centre (ISTC), Astana-Kazakhstan, La main la pate Foundation of France, China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) and its CYSC (Children and Youth Science Center), Turkic World Educational and Scientific Cooperation Organization (TWESCO), Astana, Isfahan Science & Technology Town (ISTT) of Iran, Federation of Engineering Institutes of Asia and the Pacific (FIEAP) Malaysia and many other national and international organizations.
