P. O. Box 201-00502, Nairobi, Kenya

The Network of African Science Academies (NASAC) was established on 13th December 2001 in Nairobi, Kenya, under the auspices of the African Academy of Sciences (AAS) and the then Inter Academy Panel (IAP - now Inter Academy Partnership).  In April 2012, NASAC was registered as an international non-governmental organization and was subsequently appointed the affiliate network in Africa for IAP.

NASAC is a consortium of 28 merit-based science academies in Africa and aspires to make the “voice of science” heard by policy and decision makers within Africa and worldwide.  To this end, it hold discussion fora for scientists, policymakers and communities to discuss pertinent thematic issues on the continent through conferences, seminars and workshops.  To deliver on this, NASAC draws its expertise from the membership of its member-academies.

NASAC is also dedicated to enhancing the capacity of existing national science academies and encourages African scientists to see the value and create new academies in countries where none exist.

Over the years, NASAC has produced several publications including reports and policymakers’ booklets, held many conferences and workshops, but also held capacity building training workshops for academy personnel and officials. On the programmatic side, NASAC has been engaged in initiatives that are relevant to realizing the global goals such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Sendai Framework on Disaster Risk Reduction (2015-2030). On the continental level, NASAC has lent itself to activities that promote our regional frameworks like African Union Agenda 2063 and the Science, Technology and Innovation Strategy for Africa (STISA-2024).

Our flagship programmes include Science Education, Women for Science, Climate Change Adaptation and Water, just to name a few.
